2nd Engineers (Maritime) are responsible for operational safety as well as efficient operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment. They direct subordinates and carry out engine room watchkeeping duties.

2nd Engineers (Maritime) must always apply professional knowledge and skills in maritime services to solve issues and problems at work.
Knowledge and skills in machinery maintenance
2nd Engineers (Maritime) need to participate in the maintenance of the engine room.
Minimum Requirements
- A higher diploma in mechanical (marine) engineering or above is usually required
- Relevant certificates recognised by ocean going sector and/ or river trade sector; Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 2
- 12 months of sea-time experience after attaining Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 3
