Hong Kong offers a vibrant cultural scene throughout the year, beyond its renowned annual events like Art Basel and Clockenflap. The city’s impressive schedule of artistic happenings will satisfy your cultural cravings anytime you visit.
A centre for multi-genre contemporary performances and events, Freespace in the West Kowloon Cultural District hosts experimental theatre, dance, multimedia, and music events, with an outdoor area for music and small-scale live shows.
If you enjoy musicals, head to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, which has hosted The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon among other productions. Those of a more classical bent can get their fix at Hong Kong City Hall, which has welcomed New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Yo-Yo Ma to its stage among others. If you’ve never watched a Chinese opera, what better place to do it than Hong Kong? Try the Xiqu Centre, housed in a contemporary building, or go traditional by taking in a show at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre; some shows come with English subtitles so you can follow the plotline.
If you’re looking for something more up-to-date, many of the city’s hotels and bars host live music performances ranging from rock and pop to jazz and blues.
